Boy in serious condition after being hit by van

A 12-year-old boy is in serious but stable condition at University Medical Center after being hit by a driver in a North Las Vegas crosswalk early Wednesday morning.

The accident, which took place near Goldfield Street and Tropical Parkway, occurred when the boy rode his bike though a crosswalk and in front of a van. A group of landscapers who saw the accident used a car jack to lift the van off the boy before an ambulance arrived.

The driver of the van, a 41-year-old Las Vegas woman, was not at fault, according to North Las Vegas police Sgt. Tim Bedwell. The woman had stopped for a group of pedestrians and was beginning to accelerate when the bike came into view.

"She was actually being more cautious than most drivers because she stopped for children at an unmarked crosswalk" without a sign or lights, Bedwell said. "She didn't see the boy on the far side of the street until it was too late."
