Georgia men charged for pointing guns at new homebuyers

PORTERDALE, Ga. - A man and his son are facing charges after sheriff's officials say they held guns on the new owners of a neighboring home, who were changing the locks.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the father and son were arrested Monday night and charged with aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal trespass.

The charges come after Newton County sheriff's deputies initially praised 45-year-old Robert Canoles and his son, 18-year-old Branden, for their actions. Authorities say they grabbed semiautomatic rifles and snuck up behind the couple, 61-year-old Jean-Joseph Kalonji and his 57-year-old wife Angelica. The two were fiddling with the locks when the father and son held them at gunpoint.

Deputies then booked the couple into jail when they couldn't show paperwork proving they owned the house. Charges against the Kalonjis were later dropped.

Somehow, we survived

The morning of October 7 began with deafening explosions. We understood immediately: this was war.
