Henderson moving to once-a-week trash pickup
Henderson residents will switch to once-a-week recycling and trash pickup in fall 2013.
The City Council made the decision Tuesday night to end twice-a-week trash pickup in exchange for getting a better recycling program. The vote was 5-0.
Since Dec. 9, 2010, the city has tested 25,000 homes with a pilot program that replaced the three recycling bins used now with one larger receptacle that is either 35 gallons, 65 gallons or 95 gallons. The bin, along with the trash, was picked up once a week.
The current system, operated under contract by Republic Services, picks up trash twice a week and recycling every other week.
The new citywide program will require no additional cost to residents, city officials said.
Residents told the council Tuesday that they were concerned about odor problems caused by fewer trash pickups and seniors not being able to move the larger bins.
Republic Services spokesman Bob Coyle said the company offers extra assistance for seniors with disabilities.
