HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Jan. 1, learn about the geology of the area on a moderate, three-mile hike to the Calico Tanks; for ages 10 and older. For more information or to sign up for this hike, call (702) 515-5367.

Nevada State Parks: The Nevada Division of State Parks is sponsoring free guided hikes in seven state parks on New Year's Day as part of America's State Parks First Day Hikes initiative. The participating parks will waive entrance fees for the hikes: Cathedral Gorge, Kershaw-Ryan, Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort, Spooner Lake at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, Spring Mountain Ranch, Spring Valley and Valley of Fire. Visit www.parks.nv.gov for a list of locations and times for the hikes (775-684-2770).

OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, learn about the types of venomous animals that live in Red Rock; from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the visitor center. On Friday, help clean up a trail.
