HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, learn about the geology, plants and wildlife along White Rock Loop trail on a moderate, 4- to 6-mile hike; for ages 12 and older. Also on Monday, explore the night sky on a moderate, 3-mile hike to the Gateway Canyon Overlook; for ages 10 and older. On Wednesday, watch the documentary "The Day the Earth Almost Died," about the Permian-Triassic mass extinction, then go for a moderate, 2½-mile hike to see Permian fossils; for ages 10 and older. On Oct. 9, explore Red Cap Loop on a strenuous, 3-mile hike; for ages 15 and older. Also on Oct. 9, explore Pine Creek on a moderate, 3.3-mile hike; for ages 12 and older.

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people 50 and older who are involved in hiking and related social activities plans several hikes each week of various difficulty levels, including an easy-to-moderate social hike on Saturdays. OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, learn about the animals of Red Rock in a tabletop presentation from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Visitor Center. On Tuesday, create a masterpiece in an art class at Red Rock; for ages 15 and older. Also on Tuesday, view the types of venomous animals that live in the canyon; from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Visitor Center. On Friday, help clean up a trail. On Saturday, kids ages 2 to 7 can learn about spiders through stories, activities, games, music and a craft. Also on Saturday, make a painting in a nature-based art class; for ages 4 and older.
