Studio 54 nightclub will close in January

MGM Grand announced Wednesday it was closing the Studio 54 nightclub in January.

Operators of the hotel-casino said a new nightlife venue will be announced for the location at a later date.

Studio 54 is the namesake of the original nightclub in New York City.

The club has been open at the MGM Grand for 14 years and is comprised of two levels, four bars, one main dance floor, movable go-go cages and an exclusive VIP lounge.

The venue is covered with notable memorabilia including celebrity/VIP photographs from the original Studio 54 in New York City and the Studio 54 Moon hanging over the dance floor.

Studio 54 is considered the first megaclub in Las Vegas and helped launch the Strip's nightlife trend.

MGM Grand will close Studio 54 on Jan. 8.
