New commission at UNR will focus on university’s future
The Faculty Senate at the University of Nevada, Reno has created a new panel to examine some of the difficult financial choices facing the institution in the coming years.
The Commission on the Future of the University includes both administrators and faculty. The 13-member commission hopes to start a conversation campus-wide about opportunities to establish excellence in selected areas and bring new resources to campus.
The commission will be co-chaired by David Ryfe, an associate professor in the Reynolds School of Journalism, and David Zeh, chairman of the biology department. Ryfe says that given the fiscal realities of higher education in the state, it is unlikely the university can be excellent in all areas. But he says it still can be excellent in some targeted areas.
