Out there: Hikes, programs planned at Red Rock, Mount Charleston
HIKES
Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, check out the geological features on a moderate-to-strenuous, 3-mile hike into Ice Box Canyon; for ages 12 and older. On Tuesday, learn about the constellations and the full moon on a moderate, 2½-mile hike along Fossil Ridge; for ages 12 and older.
Mount Charleston: On Friday, climb 1,400 feet through an avalanche chute to enjoy a breathtaking view of Kyle Canyon on a strenuous, 4.8-mile hike to the South Loop Overlook; for ages 15 and older. On Sunday, observe birds and other animals on an easy, half-mile walk to Corn Creek Spring.

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people 50 and older who are involved in hiking and related social activities plans several hikes each week of various difficulty levels, including an easy-to-moderate social hike on Saturdays. OTHER PROGRAMS
Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, try painting at Red Rock; for ages 15 and older. On Wednesday, learn about the birds of Red Rock in a tabletop presentation from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Visitor Center. On Saturday, kids ages 2 to 7 can learn about the great horned owl through stories, activities, music and a craft. On Sunday, a tabletop presentation will educate about animals and plants and the kinds of adaptations they have developed; 1 to 3 p.m. at the Visitor Center.
