Firefighters battling blaze in wilderness see progress

Firefighters report 50 percent containment of a 14-square-mile wildfire in a remote area south of the eastern Nevada town of Caliente.

Federal Bureau of Land Management spokesman Chris Hanefeld in Ely said Thursday that firefighters hope to have 80 percent containment of the Vigo Fire by nightfall. Hanefeld said that there have been no injuries and that no structures or homes are threatened.

About 180 state, federal and local firefighters and support personnel are fighting the 9,000-acre fire.

It's burning pinyon, juniper, brush and grass in rugged mountains in and around the Meadow Valley Wilderness.

The fire was sparked by lightning Monday in the Kane Springs area about 100 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
