Henderson man pleads guilty in $1.4 million scheme

A Henderson man has pleaded guilty to felony fraud charges for stealing about $1.4 million from his former employer, Meritage Homes of Nevada, over a four-year period.

William "Bart" Monroe, 56, pleaded guilty on Thursday to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, 11 counts of mail fraud and one count of tax evasion.

According to a statement Tuesday from the U.S. attorney's office, Monroe was a vice president in charge of land development for the builder. From March 2004 to July 2008, according to his plea agreement, Monroe engaged in a scheme to defraud Meritage Homes.

Monroe and two co-conspirators created a business, Silverado Pipe and Supply, and submitted false and fraudulent invoices to Meritage Homes for PVC pipe and other supplies.

Monroe received about $1.4 million, which he didn't declare on his income tax returns. He owed additional taxes of about $568,000 based on the scheme.

U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro set Monroe's sentencing for Sept. 27.
