HELP STAMP OUT HUNGER THIS WEEKEND

Residents are asked to leave non-perishable food items at their mailbox Saturday for their letter carrier to pick up and deliver to a local food bank or pantry, or stop by any Albertsons/Sav-on by Saturday and donate money at the register and drop off donations of non-perishable food items.

More than 300,000 people in Southern Nevada struggle with hunger every day -- one out of every six people. Most needed items include canned meat, canned tuna, canned ham, canned salmon, canned stew, peanut butter, pasta swirls & beef (pop top), beans & franks (pop top), Vienna sausage, cereal boxes (single-serving), beans, Bisquick, oatmeal, sugar and flour.

Mommy & Me West collects food for Three Square

On April 9, Mommy & Me West held a donation drive benefiting Three Square f ood b ank. The final amounts were 378 pounds of donation items and $65 in cash.

Mommy & Me West organized a similar donation drive for Three Square in October . For that, it collected 246 pounds of food and $50 in cash.

Mommy & Me West is a non profit parents organization that offers a monthly calendar full of daily city wide activities and events. The group is open to children from birth through kindergarten.

Entries due this weekend in Red Rock Canyon photo contest

The Red Rock Canyon Annual Photo Contest has been held since 2002. This year's entries will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center.

Categories are Nature, Wildlife, Creative and Monochromatic. First prize is $100. There is a ceiling cap of 100 entries per category. A teen nature/wildlife category has a top prize of $50.

Desert Newcomers to host spring fashion show at Wildhorse Golf Club

A spring fashion show featuring Alfred Dunner attire is planned from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 18 by the Desert Newcomers Club Inc. The show is scheduled at the Wildhorse Golf Club, 2100 W. Warm Springs Road.

Desert Newcomers Club Inc. is a social women's organization for those who have lived in the Las Vegas area for three years or less and want to meet new friends.

Dr. Conversation to speak at Sahara West Library

Dr. Loren Ekroth, aka Dr. Conversation, plans to present "A Feast of Conversation" from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. May 22 at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

Expect to converse on a variety of topics with friendly strangers, as 95 percent of the program is interactive, talking in pairs or groups.

Get $75 mammograms in May

Now through May 31, The Breast Center at Sunrise, 3006 S. Maryland Parkway, Suite 250; Southern Hills Hospital, 9300 W. Sunset Road, and Red Rock Radiology, 7130 Smoke Ranch Road, are offering a special $75 digital screening mammogram, without a physician's referral, for any woman at least 40 years old.

This program is most beneficial to women who may be uninsured or underinsured. If you have insurance, check with your provider. You may find your mammogram is fully covered.

To schedule a mammogram, contact The Breast Center at Sunrise at 784-7870, Southern Hills Hospital at 880-2900 or Red Rock Radiology at 731-2888.

Buy a pin to help a child

During May, all Short Line Express convenience stores will be selling Yogi Bear and Kermit paper hearts and select stores will be selling various styles of gold heart pins to raise money in support of Variety -- The Children's Charity. Variety helps children with special needs in Southern Nevada.

For more information about the group, visit varietysn.org. Patrons can purchase a paper heart for $1 or a gold heart pin for $2.

The Palms to sell cabanas for charity

Palms Pool & Bungalows inside the Palms, 4321 W. Flamingo Road, has scheduled Cabanas for a Cause every Monday beginning May 23. The community-driven project will donate all cabana sales for the day to a nonprofit charity, with each week dedicated to a different organization or local chapter throughout the Las Vegas Valley. Cabanas will be specially priced at $100 each, upon availability. Special guest DJs are scheduled to perform from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Charities include Links for Life, Three Square, the Special Olympics and Noah's Animal House.
