Police officer still in hospital after accident

A Las Vegas police officer remains hospitalized after being struck by a suspected drunken driver on Thursday.

The department said 54-year-old Tony McCleery, a 17-year veteran of the force, suffered serious injuries in the 1:35 a.m. accident on Las Vegas Boulevard South, near Town Square.

The motorcycle officer was investigating a separate drunken driving incident and was off of his motorcycle when police said Brandon A. Potts, 42, drove his pickup into the officer.

The officer was thrown about 50 feet and remains hospitalized at University Medical Center with a skull fracture, a dislocated knee, a fractured vertebrae, two broken ribs and a punctured lung, according to police.

Potts was arrested on suspicion of DUI causing substantial bodily harm.

McCleery was investigating a single-vehicle crash involving a woman who had crashed her car into the median. She was later cited for DUI.
