Pitching betrays Rebels early in 9-4 road loss to Texas Tech

UNLV lost to Texas Tech 9-4 in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday in Lubbock, Texas.

Starter Brandon Rainford lasted only 1 1/3 innings for the Rebels (7-2), giving up three runs on four hits and four walks. He was replaced by Max Javate (0-1), who allowed four runs on three hits in three innings.

Brandon Bayardi hit a two-run homer in the second for UNLV, which was playing its first road game of the season. Ryan Scott had two of the Rebels' seven hits.

Also: The UNLV women's golf team fell from fifth to 13th in the Bruin/Wave Invitational in Valencia, Calif. The Rebels shot a second-round 37-over-par 325 and are at 52-over 628, 53 strokes behind leader UCLA.

UNLV senior Therese Koelbaek shot 5-over 77 and is tied for 16th at 5-over 149, eight shots behind co-leaders Rebecca Lee-Bentham of Texas and Stephanie Kono of UCLA.

UNLV pitcher Amanda Oliveto and outfielder Pauline Monreal were named the Mountain West Conference's softball players of the week.

Oliveto, a freshman, went 2-0, struck out 16 and didn't allow an earned run in 17 1/3 innings. Monreal, also a freshman, hit .455 with one home run, seven RBIs and four runs in four games.

UNLV women's tennis coach Kevin Cory was named the United States Professional Tennis Association Intermountain College Coach of the Year. Cory led the Rebels to a 22-5 record in his 12th season as coach.

The UNLV men's tennis team (10-5) joined the national rankings this week, checking in at No. 44 after upsets over No. 31 Fresno State and No. 58 Arkansas. The ranking is the Rebels' highest since 2005.

Running back Washington gets four-year deal from Seahawks

Running back Leon Washington and the Seattle Seahawks agreed to a new four-year contract after a 2010 season during which he was in the discussions for NFL comeback player of the year. The contract is worth about $12.5 million and could max out at $16 million, and it includes $3.5 million in guaranteed money, ESPN.com reported.

Washington, who came back last year after sustaining a serious leg injury during a 2009 game, tied for the NFL lead with three kickoff returns for touchdowns and averaged 25.6 yards per return.

Also: Safety Donovin Darius signed a one-day contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars so he can retire with his former team. The 35-year-old played for the Jaguars from 1998 to 2006, then played three games with the Miami Dolphins in 2007.

Defensive lineman Marcus Stroud, released by the Buffalo Bills last month, signed a two-year contract with the New England Patriots.

The Washington Redskins released linebacker Andre Carter and backup guard Derrick Dockery. Carter was a poor fit for the team's 3-4 defense, and Dockery had become a bench-sitter who was due $3.8 million in salary in 2011.

Shawn Lee, a defensive tackle on the San Diego Chargers' only Super Bowl team, has died. He was 44. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Lee died Saturday in Raleigh, N.C., of cardiac arrest brought on by double pneumonia. The newspaper also said he had diabetes.

MISCELLANEOUS

Wranglers to visit Idaho today without six injured players

The Wranglers (33-18-4, 70 points) will open a three-game series today at the Idaho Steelheads (26-18-12, 64) without six injured players: forwards Ryan Huddy, Matt Price, Dan Bertram, Chris Higgins and Justin Bernhardt and defenseman Eddie DelGrosso.

Also, Las Vegas forward Blair Riley was promoted to Peoria of the American Hockey League.

Also: The San Jose Sharks signed goaltender Antti Niemi to a $15.2 million, four-year contract extension. Niemi had signed a $2 million, one-year deal with the Sharks this summer, months after knocking them out of the playoffs and helping the Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup.

North Carolina senior guard Italee Lucas was named to the second team of the All-Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball squad for the second straight year. Lucas, who played at Centennial High School, led the Tar Heels in scoring at 16.2 points a game, fourth in the ACC.

The 13th-ranked North Carolina basketball team lost reserve guard Reggie Bullock for the rest of the season because of a left knee injury that will require arthroscopic surgery. The freshman was averaging 6.0 points a game.

Kansas State basketball coach Frank Martin underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to repair torn cartilage and is expected to return to practice today. Also, star guard Jacob Pullen suffered a bruised right hand in Monday's victory at No. 7 Texas but won't miss any practices or games.
