Nellis opens doors

The annual Aviation Nation air show takes place today and Sunday at Nellis Air Force Base.

Billed as "the largest free public event in Nevada" by Nellis officials, this year's show celebrates the 21st century Air Force and its accomplishments in air, space and cyberspace.

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds headline the military air demonstration teams who will participate. Displays on the ground will include almost 100 aircraft .

Parking lots at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway open at 8 a.m. for the public to take buses to the annual Aviation Nation air show at Nellis Air Force Base. Spectators must go through security checkpoints and ride buses to base.

Security checkpoints will open at 8:15 a.m. both days with the first buses departing the speedway parking lots at 8:45 a.m. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 9:45 a.m. with the Thunderbirds flying the closing act at 2:30 p.m. Parking and bus transportation is free.
