Animal cruelty charges filed in Reno; 44 cats, four dogs removed

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

RENO -- Washoe County authorities have removed 44 cats and four dogs from a home in Spanish Springs and filed animal cruelty charges against the two sisters living there.

Sheriff's deputies say Lauretta Anne Nawojski, 71, also faces a charge of resisting a public official. She and sister Jackie Pearl Haney, 72, were arrested Tuesday but released from the Washoe County jail Wednesday after posting bail.

Nevada Humane Society Director Bonney Brown says about three cases of animal hoarding yearly are investigated in Washoe County. County ordinances restrict residents in congested areas to seven cats and three dogs.

Nawojski told the Reno Gazette-Journal they are innocent. She says all they are trying to do is save stray cats.
