Murderer formally sentenced for sexual assault from 1985

A 61-year-old Arkansas man convicted of committing sexual assault and murder 25 years ago was formally sentenced Monday on the sex charges.

A Clark County jury in July convicted Charles Conner of first-degree murder and two counts of sexual assault for raping 23-year-old Beth Lynn Jardine and beating her to death with a claw hammer in 1985.

Judge Elissa Cadish on Monday sentenced Conner to 10 years to life for the two sexual assault counts. The jury had sentenced Conner to death for the murder after the trial.

Cadish also granted a stay of execution -- automatic in death penalty cases -- to allow Conner's defense attorneys to file an appeal.
