HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, a four-mile moderately strenuous hike at Mount Charleston. Also Monday, a moderate night hike at Cathedral Rock. Bring a flashlight. On Thursday, a four-mile strenuous hike with a 1,500-elevation gain at Trail Canyon. On Saturday, a strenuous 10-mile hike up Bonanza Peak. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for the last few miles to the trailhead (515-5367).

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hike, contact 228-0773, or the club's website: www.aroundthebendfriends.com.

OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, an art class for those 15 and older. No experience is necessary and all supplies are included. Also on Tuesday, a program for 3- to 10-year-olds to explore the role elements play at Red Rock Canyon. On Friday, a program for 2- to 6-year-olds about ladybugs. Also Friday, a canyon cleanup is scheduled. On Saturday, a discussion on the history of Nellis Air Force Base and career opportunities there. RSVP required. Also Saturday, the Las Vegas Astronomical Society will have member telescopes to view the night sky from 7-10 p.m. at the visitor center. The gate closes at 8 p.m. and a $7 entrance fee per vehicle will be charged (515-5367).
