Major League plans: Las Vegas would be in American League, play in domed stadium

Details are still scarce about the possibility of major league baseball in Las Vegas, but Mayor Oscar Goodman disclosed some information Thursday.

The stadium would be domed and hold 45,000 spectators, he said. Talks are ongoing to see if a team is interested in moving here, and Las Vegas is designated an American League city.

The talks so far involve building the stadium on city-owned land, but Goodman wouldn't say which site is being considered. The city controls a few large tracts of land downtown.

Goodman also acknowledged that the work would probably have to be picked up by his successor. His term ends next year, and term limits prevent him from seeking re-election.

"I was hoping that I could throw out the first pitch, but I said that 11 1/2 years ago," he said.

The city also is negotiating with the Cordish Co., a Baltimore developer that's looking to build an NBA or NHL arena and entertainment complex downtown.
