Two Southern Nevadans to get math, science teaching honor

Two Southern Nevada teachers are among 103 to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Math teacher Michael Patterson of Las Vegas and science teacher Cynthia Kern of Henderson will receive their awards later this year in Washington, D.C. The honorees were named Monday.

The award is given annually to the best pre-college level science and math teachers nationwide. The winners are chosen by a panel of educators, scientists and mathematicians.

The award alternates each year between instructors teaching kindergarten through sixth grade and those teaching seventh through 12th grades. The latter were this year's recipients.

Winners get $10,000 from the National Science Foundation, plus a trip to Washington.
