HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, a strenuous, 5-mile hike at the South Loop of Mount Charleston. On Wednesday, a moderate, 3½-mile hike with some bouldering through Echo Canyon. On Friday, a moderate, 2½-mile hike at Calico Tanks. On May 23, an 11-mile, strenuous hike at Hidden Forest (515-5367).

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hike, contact 228-0773, or the club's website: www.aroundthebendfriends.com

OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, a 20-minute discussion on the geology of Red Rock Canyon, ongoing from 1-4 p.m. On Wednesday, an ongoing interactive program on animal tracks from 1-3 p.m. On Thursday, an ongoing presentation on the desert tortoise, from 10 a.m. to noon at the visitor center. On Friday, an interactive program for 2-10 year olds about Red Spring. On Saturday, a program for 2-6 year olds on snakes. Also Saturday, a nature-based art class. No experience necessary, all supplies are provided. On Saturday, ongoing from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., will be a story time in the visitor center. From 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, the Las Vegas Astronomical Society will have member telescopes available. Gates close at 8 p.m. (515-5367).

Archaeo-Nevada Society along with the Bureau of Land Management invites volunteers to help with Red Rock Conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.
