Police identify officer who fired at suspect jumping wall

Las Vegas police identified the officer who fired his gun last week after being startled by someone jumping a wall.

Luis Norris, 39, was placed on paid administrative leave following the June 14 incident on the 3900 block of Cherokee Avenue, near Desert Inn and Sandhill roads.

Officers were speaking with someone about 8:25 p.m. about a possible prowler in the area when a male “appeared on the wall of the residence,” startling the officer, who fired one round, police said.

The person was not the prowler and was taking a shortcut, police said.

The shooting will be reviewed internally.

The 14-year department veteran was shot in the line of duty in 1997. Norris had been on the force less than a year when he was shot four times during an exchange of gunfire with a man during a domestic disturbance call. Norris was hit in his protective vest and foot.

He was awarded the Metropolitan Police Department’s Medal of Honor.
