Ex-boyfriend arrested in slaying outside restaurant

An ex-boyfriend of a 23-year-old woman fatally shot earlier in the week outside the fast-food restaurant where she worked was arrested Friday in connection with her slaying, Las Vegas police said Saturday.

Police said 26-year-old Kevin Gipson was booked into the Clark County Detention Center with no bail for the recommended charge of murder with a deadly weapon.

The identity of the deceased woman has not been released by authorities. Police said the slaying took place about 5:30 a.m. Thursday outside a Jack in the Box restaurant at 7510 W. Lake Mead Blvd., near Buffalo Drive.

Witnesses told police the woman was arguing with a man in the parking lot when he shot her in the head. Police said Gipson fled the scene. Employees told police the victim had "some relationship problems."

The woman was taken to University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

L.A. teachers union, district reach deal to save positions

The Los Angeles teachers union says it has reached a deal with the school district that would shorten the school year by at least five days, as officials cope with a $640 million budget deficit.

United Teachers Los Angeles spokeswoman Marla Eby said under the agreement reached Saturday, teachers will take five unpaid furlough days this year and seven next year, saving the nation's largest school district $180 million.

The deal would allow schools to maintain class sizes and save more than 2,000 jobs, including those of 284 librarians, nurses and counselors threatened with layoffs this summer.

The agreement still has to be approved by members of the teachers union.

Teenager captured in Mexico, returned to face murder charge

A teenager wanted in the shooting death of a 17-year-old boy has been captured in Mexico and returned to Nevada.

Sparks police said 16-year-old Oscar Uribe was caught last week and deported to the United States. First he was held in Los Angeles then sent on Friday to Sparks.

He is accused in the death of Elvin Beltran who was shot Dec. 5 during a late-night fight involving about 25 people after a party in Sparks.

The Sun Valley resident was booked into the Washoe County Jail on suspicion of murder.
