HORSE RACING
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $22,000, Starter allowance $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Kazroad - Exits a bullet work for a race that most likely will be switched to synthetics; rain was forecast Friday night.
Cactus Flyer - Clever claim by John Sadler; shows you don't need to spend a zillion dollars to buy a useful racehorse.
Long Shot - Terrify
Race 2 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $11,000, Claiming $8,000, 4-year-olds and up
Heroi Do Bafra - Beaten favorite deserves another chance for Mike Mitchell; like that Joel Rosario takes the reins.
Autocue - Just missed last time in an honest effort; he has found a home at this low class level, the one to beat.
Long Shot - Souvenir Slew
Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Ida of March - Has had a rough trip each of his last 3 starts; suspect with a clean journey, can outrun his 12/1 odds.
Melbisha - Logical chalk has shown gradual improvement with each start; Victor Espinoza likely to stay closer to the pace.
Long Shot - Bruin Ballet
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds
Good Turn - Like the blinkers on to get him over the hump; his race two back versus High Success is fast enough to beat these.
Precious Duke - Logical chalk off an overwhelming maiden claiming win; still, I like trying to beat grossly overbeat graduates.
Long Shot - Ministers Altarboy
Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $44,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds
Fandino - Exits a key MSW race that threw all kinds of winners; been working fast and could surprise at nice odds.
Fyvio - Logical chalk from a low percentage barn; I like betting the barn when they are underdogs, not heavy favorites.
Long Shot - Face and an Ace
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Costanta - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; another productive claim by John Sadler?
Warren's Moon - Was well meant in debut with Rafael Bejarano despite 16/1 odds; if she improves one step she can graduate.
Long Shot - Unusual Fantasy
Race 7 - 7 furlongs, Purse $13,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Maeve - Like the trainer switch to Jeff Mullins; suspect the last race was a test drive, expect much bigger improvement tonight.
Makit Till Midnite - Fearful of the rail post, but Rafael Bejarano can make it work; grinder can save all the ground inside.
Long Shot - Perfect Magic
Race 8 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), $60,000 China Doll, Fillies, 3-year-olds
In the Slips - There could be some graded stakes winners exiting this heat; she has your typical dynamic late turf kick.
Andina - Who knows how high her ceiling will end up being; Ben Cecil has an uncoupled entry, must keep an eye on both.
Long Shot - Bab At The Bowster
Race 9 - 7 furlongs, $150,000 San Carlos Handicap, 4-year-olds and up
Dancing in Silks - Did not get his A game in the Palos Verde; figures to be wound tighter this time by Carla Gaines.
Bestdressed - Twice beaten chalk is capable of pulling a major upset; Alonso Quinonez needs to make some kind of impact.
Long Shot - Supreme Summit
Race 10 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
Chailepis - Big rider switch to Joel Rosario for the money shot; his race 2 back, if repeated, would crush these.
Magic Dust - Bruce Headley cull has been well bet except in last start; won't face a group much slower than these.
Long Shot - A Pint for Mary
Best Bet - Costanta (race 6)
Santa Anita Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/4/$40.00; Long Shots, 8/2/$21.20; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 606/152/$978.60; Long Shots, 303/47/$497.40; Best Bets, 37/14/$64.80
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #1 Radiohead (5/1) in race 8 at Gulfstream Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, My Misty's Echo ran out at Laurel Park. Stats - 37/25/$184.40
