HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, there will be a moderately strenuous four-mile hike to South Loop for a morning at Mount Charleston away from the heat of Las Vegas. On Wednesday, those ages 15 and older will enjoy this moderate/strenuous three-mile hike, up 950 feet and a few switchbacks, at Mary Jane Falls. On Friday, visit one of the oldest treasures on Mount Charleston, a bristlecone pine tree that is approximately 3,000 years old. This strenuous hike is a six-mile out-and-back hike that takes on about 1,500 feet of elevation. On Saturday, spend the evening at Red Spring on an adventure into the night world of bats. Ages 15 and up.

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hike, call 228-0773 or log on to www. aroundthebendfriends.com.

OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Wednesday, come out to hear a story about the plants and animals of the Mojave Desert. Afterward, children 3 to 5 will be given the chance to discuss and draw a picture about what they have learned. On Friday, come out to Red Rock Canyon with your 2- to 6-year-olds for a fun and interactive program about butterflies. Children will learn all about butterflies with a hands-on activity. On Saturday, the Junior Naturalists program for 2- to 6-year-olds will focus on the plants and flowers in the Mojave Desert.

Archaeo-Nevada Society along with the Bureau of Land Management invites volunteers to help with Red Rock Conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.
