Near-record heat triggers warning for Las Vegas today

An excessive heat warning is in effect from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. as temperatures are expected to reach 108 in parts of the Las Vegas Valley, the National Weather Service said. Friday's high of 109 was one degree short of the record set in 1944.

In addition to the heat warning, county officials want residents to be aware of a smoke advisory issued for today through Monday. Smoke from Southern California wildfires is expected to make air quality in the valley poor this weekend. Meteorologists said wind gusts are expected to be light, though.
