ENTERTAINMENT: Weekend events featuring long-timers
A couple of weekend events with interest to longtime Las Vegans labor in the shadows of bigger concerts and events.
— “Stars Among the Angels” is a variety show to benefit the Childrens Service Guild of Southern Nevada at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Railhead club at Boulder Station, 4111 Boulder Highway. Admission is free (donations requested) or $15 for upgraded seating.
Las Vegas composer Larry Hart will dedicate “Stand Strong,” a song from his Michael Jackson-produced musical “Sisterella,” to the late entertainer. The show also includes performers from Hart’s newer venture “Praise,” the comedy magic of Spike and Hammer, motivational speaker James Brewster Thompson, singer Tess Langguth and an 11-piece big band.
— John Kaye, a Las Vegas musician currently trying to crack the entertainment scene in Los Angeles, returns to his hometown to perform his original acoustic jazz with a trio at 8 p.m. Saturday in the cabaret at the Liberace Museum, 1175 E. Tropicana Ave. Tickets are $25 at the door.
Health permitting, John says his 86-year-old father, Norman Kaye, will attend. The elder Kaye is the only surviving member of the Mary Kaye Trio, which pioneered the Las Vegas lounge scene in the 1950s. John will perform two of Norman’s original songs as part of the set.
