School support staff due notice of 592 layoffs

As many as 592 support staff in the Clark County School District could be notified by mail today that their positions have been eliminated for the next school year, district officials said.

Because of budget shortfalls, the district had to cut a total of 854 positions, which also includes 209 teachers or licensed personnel and 53 administrative positions. Teachers are to be notified by May 15 and administrators by May 30 if their positions have been cut.

Many of the jobs eliminated are vacant positions that have not been filled.

Officials noted that eliminated positions do not necessarily mean layoffs since affected employees could fill district positions that are now vacant.
