Las Vegas minister sentenced in stock scheme
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities say a federal judge has sentenced a Las Vegas minister to more than three years in prison for a scheme involving the fraudulent sale of $7 million worth of stocks.
Michael Haynes, a minister in Las Vegas, was convicted in September for conspiring to evade taxes. Co-defendent David Jett pleaded guilty to conspiracy in March and testified against Haynes.
Chief U.S. District Judge Robert L. Hunt sentenced Haynes to 37 months and ordered him to pay nearly $835,000 in restitution. Jett received five years probation and was ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution.
The men were accused of arranging the fraudulent sale of stock in One Voice Technologies Inc. Prosecutors say Haynes then funneled the money through the Bank of Nova Scotia and did not report the money as income.
