YOUR WEEKEND: Vote for our guy, Fa La La La La
The presidential election is just a few weeks away, but the big election-year song fest is only days away. For the fifth consecutive time in the waning days of a presidential election season, the Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society will perform a show titled Songs of Our Politics at UNLV.
The show starts at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, in the Doc Rando Hall of the Beam Music Center. Tickets cost $8 for adults, $5 for seniors,
and it’s free to students showing ID.
The concert features presidential campaign songs from George Washington to modern times.
For example, “I Like Ike” was the theme song of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower’s winning 1952 campaign. The song for the Republican standard bearer was penned by legendary songwriter Irving Berlin, and it closed with the memorable verse: “Tried and true/Courageous, strong and human/Why, even Harry Truman/Says, ‘I like Ike.’ “
The show is narrated by John Hanks and features a motley orchestra that includes banjo, piccolo, percussion and keyboards. Dr. Doug Peterson serves again as music director.
Peterson said the show provides a fun and revealing “glimpse into the ways presidential candidates have courted and persuaded Americans to vote for them.”
The Beam Music Center is located adjacent to the Judy Bayley Theatre in the heart of the UNLV campus at 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. For tickets, call the box office at 895-2787. For more information, visit snmas.com/calendar.
