SAFEKEY, THE EDGE

Registration opens for recreation programs

Clark County Parks and Recreation Safekey and The Edge programs will hold mail-in registration July 1 through Aug. 7 for before- and after-school recreation programs held at participating elementary and middle school sites.

Registration applications are available at all Clark County Recreation Centers, 12-month Safekey program sites and the Sunset Park's Safekey office.

Safekey is a before- and after-school program sponsored by the Clark County Parks and Recreation Community Enrichment Division. Safekey will be held in more than 70 elementary schools during the 2008-09 school year.

The Edge is an after-school program for middle school students attending Lawrence Silvestri, Sawyer and Faiss middle schools.

Students must attend Safekey or The Edge programs at the school in which they are enrolled.

FIREWORKS CAP NIGHT

Philharmonic plans annual patriotic concert

The Las Vegas Philharmonic opens its 10th anniversary season with its annual Star Spangled Spectacular 8 p.m. Friday at Hills Park, 9100 Hillpointe Road. Gates open at 4:30 p.m.

The group promises to celebrate the Fourth of July with a big bang and special surprises throughout the evening.

Under the direction of Music Director David Itkin with Associate Conductor Richard McGee, the program features a variety of tunes from a patriotic George M. Cohan medley to Broadway favorites performed by Brent Barrett, tenor and former star of "Phantom -- the Las Vegas Spectacular."

The grand finale will display a full fireworks show by pyrotechnics company Zambelli Internationale.

Lawn seating is first-come first-served. Burgers, hot dogs, soda and ice cream will be sold in the park. Attendees are welcome to bring their own coolers.

Tickets for the VIP Pavilion (adults 21 and over only) are $100, which includes food. General admission is $25 in advance and $30 at the gate. Children 6-12 years are $20 in advance and $25 at the gate. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the box office at 895-2787.
