HORSE RACING
August 17, 2008 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 7 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds
Lucky Honey - Mike Mitchell has an uncoupled entry and this is the longer price; doesn't hurt that Garrett Gomez is riding.
Yankee Visionary - Claimed by Doug O'Neill and spot for a quick ROI; I like horses turning back in distance to 7-furlongs.
Long Shot - Savvy and Smooth
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $26,000, Claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Too Phar - Bill Spawr drops her to the level he claimed her from Roger Stein; has cashed some paychecks, but needs this win.
Newport Topper - Typical Jeff Mullins move, ran great for $35k, in today for $20k; beware, Mullins has an uncoupled entry.
Long Shot - Steppin Out Rose
Race 3 - 1 mile, Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds and up
Sensational Score - Ran well in the Claiming Crown, but the extra distance hurt him; much better suited going one mile.
Mr. Katz - He has his moments and appears well spotted to excel; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip for Isais Enriquez.
Long Shot - Timias
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Linda Lou - Speedy sort did everything but win in last; she was running off a 4-month layoff, figures to be tighter today.
Black Eyed Lady - Eoin Harty hires Bejarano on this 10-month layoff horse; she ran once, in a key race, and is working great.
Long Shot - Stunningly
Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
Uffizi - Ran like a short horse in last off a 2-month hiatus; big rider switch to Rafael Bejarano signals the barns intent.
Earth Planet - Chalk from the Bobby Frankel barn makes his U.S. debut; he's been away 13-months, but attracts Garrett Gomez.
Long Shot - Tycoon Doby
Race 6 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
Oyster Cat - Eoin Harty has a barnful of good looking 2-YOs; this in one of 7 FTS in the field, edge to you seeing the odds.
Street Hero - Was tons the best last time when butchered multiple times; Espinoza stays on, hoping for a less eventful trip.
Long Shot - Launch the Bull
Race 7 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 7 feet), $100,000 Solana Beach Handicap, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Tutta Bella - She'll enjoy being back with her own Cal-bred kind; when Garrett Gomez rides her, she either wins or just misses.
Lethal Heat - Logical chalk after beating the boys in the Real Good Deal; I fear she may get a rough trip from a bad post.
Long Shot - America's Friend
Race 8 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Swift Demand - Chance for Garrett to sit a trip with a ton of speedballs inside of him; top combo of John Sadler and Gomez.
Crimson Cowboy - There is a lot of speed in here, but this Morey horse figures to fight it out; broke his maiden at SA.
Long Shot - Dr. J J
Race 9 - 7 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
Coolerator - Taking a solid class drop, which may be enough to get her picture taken; third start off a 3-month hiatus.
Gotham Lights - The less starts the better at this bottom class rung; Daniel Dunham horse raced evenly in his career debut.
Long Shot - Pierre's Favor
Best Bet - Sensational Score (race 3)
