Supreme Court to webcast hearing on ballot measures

CARSON CITY -- The Nevada Supreme Court is providing a live webcast of today's oral arguments on challenges to three proposed ballot questions.

This is just the fourth time the Supreme Court has webcast oral arguments. The court will be sitting in Carson City, but Chief Justice Mark Gibbons said "the webcast will allow courtroom access by everyone with a computer and an Internet connection."

Access to the webcast will be through the Supreme Court's Web site: www.nvsupremecourt.us.

The hearing starts at 10 a.m. and is scheduled to last an hour.

The three measures were submitted in May with more than enough signatures to qualify for the November ballot. But a Carson City district judge ruled the measures did not follow state law concerning the affidavits turned in by the signature gatherers.

Two of the measures would reallocate future room tax revenues that have been directed to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to other uses, including education. A third measure would require a two-thirds vote by the public for tax increases sought on ballot questions.
