Mavs' Stackhouse out with hamstring strain

Dallas Mavericks swingman Jerry Stackhouse will be out for about a week because of a mildly strained right hamstring.

Stackhouse was injured Wednesday night. An MRI exam Friday revealed the extent of the injury.

Stackhouse is averaging 9.9 points, 2.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 24.4 minutes this season.

Also: San Antonio Spurs guard Brent Barry will miss three to four weeks after injuring his left calf for the second time in a month.

The latest injury was a muscle strain in the third quarter of San Antonio's 90-89 victory against Miami on Thursday.

The New York Knicks said coach Isiah Thomas wouldn't comment on a report that his 19-year-old son was arrested for underage drinking in Bloomington, Ind.

Joshua Thomas, a student at Indiana, was arrested on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, illegal consumption of alcohol and being a minor in a tavern, according to the New York Daily News. He was released from the Monroe County Jail on $500 bail.

The News, citing a police source, said Thomas was arrested after he went to a Bloomington hospital to be treated for a swollen eye, which came when he was hit by either a beer bottle or another man's fist at the bar.

Former star quarterback Moon faces DUI charge

Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon was charged with driving under the influence as a result of a traffic stop in December.

Moon was driving an SUV with expired plates when pulled over on Dec. 28, and a Medina, Wash., police officer smelled intoxicants near the vehicle. Moon refused a field sobriety test and a breath test.

The DUI charge was the second for Moon in the past nine months.

Also: Two Texas A&M football players accused of tying up and mugging a drug dealer at gunpoint have been indicted in College Station, Texas, on felony robbery charges.

Yemi Babalola and Brandon Joiner were indicted Thursday on two counts each of aggravated robbery, the district attorney's office said.

Joiner also was indicted on one felony count of manufacturing or delivering methamphetamine and two misdemeanor counts of possessing marijuana and hydrocodone.

Three Penn State football players charged in connection with a campus fight last fall have been kicked off the team, at least temporarily, a person familiar with the players' status said.

Defensive tackle Chris Baker and linebacker Navorro Bowman are awaiting trial on felony assault and other charges related to a fight last October at the campus student union.

Cornerback Knowledge Timmons was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and defiant trespass.

Morgan takes lead in Champions Tour event

Gil Morgan had two eagles in a four-hole stretch on his way to a 7-under-par 65 and the first-round lead in the Turtle Bay Championship in Kahuku, Hawaii.

Morris Hatalsky capped the round with consecutive birdies and was two strokes behind Morgan in the Champions Tour's first full-field event of the year.

Also: Johan Edfors of Sweden had four birdies in his last five holes and finished with a 6-under 66 to take a two-stroke lead with a 9-under 135 after the second round of the Qatar Masters in Doha.

Overnight co-leader Lee Westwood of England (70) and Charl Schwartzel of South Africa (67) were tied for second.

The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open has hired Mark Gardner as tournament director for the 2008 event, which will be played Oct. 16 to 19 at TPC Summerlin.

Gardner, 39, was recently assistant tournament director for the Travelers Championship in Hartford, Conn.

NHL honors league's first black player O'Ree

Willie O'Ree, who was given the nickname "the Jackie Robinson of hockey" after becoming the first black player in the NHL in 1958, was honored at the league's diversity luncheon in Atlanta as part of NHL All-Star weekend.

O'Ree made his NHL debut on Jan. 18, 1958, at the Montreal Forum as a member of the Boston Bruins.

"It was tough at the beginning," O'Ree, 72, said of the backlash he encountered in the league. "I was faced with racial slurs and remarks. I wanted to stay focused on what I wanted to do. I just took it a day at a time."

Also: Adam Cracknell scored in the first period and goaltender Kevin Lalande made 32 saves for his second career shutout as the Wranglers (25-8-7, 57 points) beat the Utah Grizzlies (19-18-3, 41) in an ECHL game in Salt Lake City.

The teams move to Las Vegas for back-to-back games at the Orleans Arena tonight and Sunday.

Drainage problems hit Santa Anita track again

Santa Anita canceled racing for the fifth day this month because of wet conditions on a synthetic track that has had drainage problems since its installation.

The Arcadia, Calif., track received 3 inches of rain over the previous two days, besides 2 inches of hail that fell Thursday on the Cushion Track and compounded its drainage problems.

Racing was scheduled to resume today with the 11-race Sunshine Millions card that includes the $1 million Sunshine Millions Classic, however more rain is expected through Sunday.

Also: Johnny Weir hit a triple-toe, triple-toe combination -- and Evan Lysacek misfired on his combo, landing awkwardly on the quad portion and converting his planned triple-toe into a double -- to take a 1.35-point lead after the men's short program of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in St. Paul, Minn..

Weir totaled 83.40 points and Lysacek 82.05. Stephen Carriere, last year's world junior champion, was third with 76.66.

Michael Haugen Jr. of Cave Creek, Ariz., went 15-3 in round-robin match play to earn the top seed for Sunday's 9:30 a.m. stepladder finals of the PBA Tour's Tournament of Champions at Red Rock Lanes.

Chris Barnes will be the No. 2 seed, Ryan Shafer is seeded third, and Pete Weber is seeded fourth after bowling a 247 in his final game to jump up from sixth.

Las Vegas desert racer Rob MacCachren claimed the pole position for this weekend's SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in Laughlin by covering the 61/4-mile loop course in 6 minutes, 52.28 seconds in his Trophy Truck.

Robby Gordon of Charlotte, N.C., will start alongside MacCachren on the front row after recording a second-place qualifying time of 6:53.12.

Racing begins at 7 a.m. today and Sunday.

Elena Gantcheva won her No. 1 singles match and teamed with Kristina Nedeltcheva to win at No. 1 doubles as the No. 43-ranked UNLV women's tennis team opened its 2008 dual-match season with a 6-1 victory over Pacific at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Gantcheva and Nedeltcheva won 8-1 in doubles to improve their career mark to 25-4, and then Gantcheva, ranked 30th nationally in singles, posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over the Tigers' Jolanta Twarowska.

The College of Southern Nevada baseball team lost 5-4 in its season-opening Coyote Border Battle at Morse Stadium, surrendering four runs to Arizona's Cochise College in the top of the ninth inning, including the game winner on a wild pitch.

Colby Shreve worked the first six innings for the Coyotes, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out eight.
