New hearing date set for child rape suspect

The preliminary hearing for the man charged in the videotaped rape of a young girl was postponed until Dec. 12.

Chester Arthur Stiles, 37, appeared briefly Monday morning in Las Vegas Justice Court while the judge ordered the new hearing date. Stiles' lawyer, public defender Jeff Banks, had asked for more time to prepare for the hearing, which will determine whether probable cause exists to send the case to District Court for trial.

Stiles faces 22 criminal charges, including lewdness with a minor under 14, in the videotaped assault of a girl who was about 3 years old.

He was arrested Oct. 15 in Henderson amid a nationwide manhunt more than two weeks after Nye County authorities identified him as a man captured on video raping a girl.

Stiles faces three additional charges stemming from a separate alleged molestation of a 6-year-old Las Vegas girl in December 2003.
