IN BRIEF
PLAYING FROM THE ROUGH
Golfer sparks 20-acre wildfire in Reno
A wayward golf shot that led to a gnarly lie in dry rough sparked a grass fire near a Reno golf course that burned about 20 acres, officials said.
The golfer had knocked his ball into the grass beyond the course Monday afternoon, officials said. When he tried to play back to the fairway, his club struck something that created a spark.
"He was totally honest about it," said Reno Battalion Chief Curtis Johnson.
About 50 firefighters tackled the blaze as it spread through tinder-dry grass, and engine trucks were brought in to protect nearby homes.
No structures were lost and no one was injured.
LAS VEGAS WASH
One drowning victim identified as LV man
Authorities identified one of the men who was found dead after he was swept away by fast-moving water in the Las Vegas Wash as 31-year-old Rodwal Garcia.
Garcia of Las Vegas was fishing on Sunday with a 42-year-old man near Northshore Road west of Lake Mead when he waded into the wash.
Water swept Garcia away. When the 42-year-old man went in to help, he also was taken away by the water, authorities said.
The bodies of the two men were recovered on Monday.
HENDERSON ACCIDENT
Girl killed riding her bicycle is named
The 11-year-old bicyclist who died after she was hit by a vehicle Saturday morning in Henderson was Corina Babeanu, authorities said Tuesday.
Babeanu of Henderson was eastbound on Flintrock Road about 11 a.m. and didn't stop at the stop sign at Whitney Ranch Drive, police said.
A 57-year-old woman driving a 2006 Hyundai Elantra south on Whitney Ranch hit Babeanu, who wasn't wearing a helmet, police said.
Babeanu was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where she later died.
BURNING HOUSE
S.F. artist who saved dog from fire dies
A San Francisco artist has died from injuries he sustained four months ago while saving a friend's dog from a burning house.
Michael James Keenan, 44, died Monday of complications from burns at St. Francis Memorial Hospital. He sustained burns over 80 percent of his body in February when he rescued a Jack Russell terrier from a Russian Hill home.
For several weeks after he was injured, friends and family were optimistic Keenan would recover. Doctors initially said his chances of survival were 50-50.
