Allegiant Travel forms new information technology company

Allegiant Travel Co. said it has formed an information technology company that will attempt to sell systems to other airlines.

Called Allegiant Systems, it is a joint venture with Avintel, a technology consulting company in Toulouse, France, and Lixar, a software company in Ottawa, Canada. Ownership percentages were not divulged.

An Allegiant spokeswoman said it would trim the company's technology expenses by reducing the number of vendors it needs for different parts of the operation. In addition, it hopes to generate profits through the joint venture by signing other airlines as clients.

The main focus areas, at least initially, will be in systems for selling items to passengers in flight, automating some functions of the cabin crew and mobile applications.
