Atlantic City casino worker suspensions prompt complaint

ATLANTIC CITY - The main Atlantic City casino workers union has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board over suspensions handed down to 21 workers who took part in a recent protest at Tropicana Casino and Resort.

Local 54 of the UNITE-HERE union claims the suspensions are illegal. It wants an injunction allowing the suspended employees to return to work.

Those workers were among 49 union members arrested Friday after they sat in the roadway and stopped traffic. The union was protesting the lack of a new contract and the casino's decision to end its employee pension plan in favor of cash payments to workers.

Tropicana President Tony Rodio says the casino expected the charges, but doesn't believe it acted improperly.
