Economy parking at McCarran going up $2 to $10

Economy parking at McCarran International Airport becomes a little less economical starting today with the daily rate rising from $8 to $10.

Although cheaper than cities such as New York and Chicago, it still is steep for locals who have come to regard free parking as a right. The surface lot north of Terminal 1 was cheaper to build than a parking garage, said Randall Walker, director of the Clark County Department of Aviation, but it is more expensive to operate because of the shuttle bus service that ferries passengers back and forth.

In the meantime, the plan to shut the lot at the first of the year has been postponed indefinitely. Although a surface lot east of the Terminal 3 garage is open, airport management has not found space adjacent to Terminal 1. The original idea must be reworked after finding that employee parking needs have risen by several hundred spaces mainly because of new concessions and a crew base opened by Spirit Airlines.
