Nevada to share in 18-state settlement with debt collector

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto Tuesday announced the state had joined 18 others in a settlement with debt collector NCO Financial Systems Inc., resolving charges of unfair debt collection practices.

NCO Financial will set aside $575,000 to the states for education efforts and consumer protection enforcement. Nevada will receive $51,562 of the settlement. The company will also set aside $950,000, or $50,000 for Nevada's share, to pay restitution for the next three years.

"NCO Financial Systems engaged in misleading and deceptive debt collection practices harming Nevadans," Masto said in a statement.

She said the settlement ensures that this company will be "more transparent about consumer's rights."

Under the terms of the agreement, NCO Financial must comply with the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and other federal and state laws, provide notice to customers about their debt collection rights and monitor compliance by its employees and independent contractors by submitting reports to the states every six months for 18 months.
