Results choppy for Las Vegas taxi industry

The Las Vegas taxi industry continued to show choppy results in September.
According to statistics compiled by the Nevada Taxicab Authority, the 2.3 million revenue trips during the month was 0.2 percent higher than the same month a year ago, with total revenues of $34.4 million up 3.8 percent. However, revenue for each driver's shift dropped 4 percent and the number of trips per shift dropped 7.3 percent, a major complaint among drivers. Because they work under revenue-sharing formulas, the drivers contend they are losing income because of the authority's decision last year to create more permanent taxi permits called medallions.
The authority also agreed to grant each of the 16 cab companies three temporary, part-time medallions during the automotive aftermarket shows, headed by SEMA, that will be in town next week. The medallions cover Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
