2 killed in Sunday crash near Las Vegas Indian Colony ID’d

Two men killed in a wrong-way car crash Sunday evening on U.S. Highway 95 between the cutoffs for Kyle Canyon and Lee Canyon roads have been identified.

They are Michael Phillip Johannsen, 29, of North Las Vegas, and David Beckstrand, 40, of Las Vegas, according to the Clark County coroner’s office.

Nevada Highway Patrol spokeswoman trooper Chelsea Stuenkel said first responders were called about 4:15 p.m. Sunday to the crash north of the Las Vegas Indian Colony.

NHP received calls that a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by Beckstrand, was driving recklessly on the highway and going north in the southbound lanes when it collided head-on with a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro, Stuenkel said.

The collision sent the Camaro, which was driven by Johannsen, into a 2015 Subaru Impreza WRX that then struck a semi-truck. Beckstrand and Johannsen died at the crash site.

The 34-year-old man who was driving the Subaru was taken to University Medical Center by Mercy Air with injuries that were not life-threatening, Stuenkel said. The driver of the semi-truck, a 51-year-old man, was not taken to a hospital.

This was the 19th fatal crash in Nevada Highway Patrol Southern Command’s jurisdiction this year.
