Cost-cutting closes three more police substations to public

The Metropolitan Police Department is closing the lobbies of three substations to cut costs.

Bolden Area Command at 1851 Stella Lake Street, South Central Area Command at 4860 Las Vegas Boulevard South and Southeast Area Command at 3675 Harmon Ave. will close to the public on Saturday.

Police said the locations were used primarily for taking crime and accident reports, registering firearms and fielding special service requests from citizens.

Four substations remain open to the public: Northeast Area Command at 3750 Cecile Ave., Convention Center Area Command at 750 Sierra Vista Dr., Northwest Area Command at 9850 Cheyenne Ave. and Enterprise Area Command at 6975 Windmill Lane.

Downtown Area Command closed its lobby in March, 2010.

Civilian support employees from the closed lobbies will be moved to more critical positions with the department, the department said. No positions have been eliminated.

The department has been eliminating positions and reducing staff for several years as its budget, supported by property tax revenue, began to shrink.
