District Attorney’s office gets national award for improved child support enforcement

The Clark County District Attorney’s office has received a national award for most improved child support enforcement, which includes doing a better job establishing paternity and obtaining new child support court orders, current and overdue support payments.
District Attorney Steve Wolfson praised the staff of his Family Support Division for winning the 2013 Most Improved Program Award from the National Child Support Enforcement Association.
“Our entire DAFS staff is to be commended for the remarkable improvement we are seeing,” Wolfson said. “Despite many challenges, including the downturn in the economy, our team has persevered and continued to increase the amount of money we collect for the children in our community.”
The division collected about $125 million for Clark County children in 2012. Since 2009, paternity establishment is up 46 percent, new child support court orders are up 17 percent, current support collection is up 34 percent and collection of overdue support is up 17 percent.
The marked improvement is due to several factors, including community outreach, a call center that handles 15,000 calls a month and relocating the division to the Child Support Center of Southern Nevada.
The division handles about 61,000 cases or 59 percent of Nevada’s child support enforcement cases.
The award will be formally presented to staff in August.
