Four suspects in custody after gang-related shooting
July 5, 2012 - 9:28 am
A late-night fight at a restaurant led to a gang-related shooting that injured four Las Vegans on Thursday morning near Twain Avenue and Paradise Road, Las Vegas police said.
The victims, three females and one male ages 17 to 18, were walking around 4 a.m. near the entrance of Siegel Suites when they were fired on by three men and a male juvenile. The suspects had fought with the four victims at a restaurant a few hours earlier, police said.
A Las Vegas police gang crimes unit investigating the shooting received a tip that led to a break in the case.
"The community in this case was pivotal in ensuring this case got solved," Dan Coe, a lieutenant in the gang crimes division, said. "We can't solve gang crimes more often than not because victims are uncooperative and suspects are uncooperative."
Police said the tip helped officers locate the suspects, who are thought to have ties to a Stockton, Calif., gang.
One of the four suspects was injured in the fight at the restaurant and was found at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.
Three other suspects were found around 11:30 a.m. at an apartment complex near Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue. Two surrendered immediately. One barricaded himself inside an apartment for approximately 20 minutes but surrendered after a SWAT unit was called. A gun was recovered at the apartment complex, but police have not verified whether it was the weapon used in the quadruple shooting.
Police are expected to release the names of the adult suspects when formal charges are filed. The recommended charges are one count of attempted robbery, four counts of attempted murder and four counts of conspiracy to attempt murder.
The four victims are not thought to have gang affiliations, police said. Their injuries were not life-threatening. They were treated at Sunrise and released.
