Grandson faces attempted murder charge in grandfather’s beating

A 18-year-old man who beat his grandfather with a baseball bat told investigators voices in his head directed him to kill his relative, according to a Las Vegas police report released Thursday.

The report said Nicholas Duran, 18, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center Tuesday on a charge of attempted murder after police located Duran’s grandfather, reported to be 73, with his head covered in blood.

Duran’s grandfather told police his grandson beat him repeatedly over the head with a bat after he told him to leave his apartment on the 8400 block of Westcliff Drive near Durango Drive.

Duran’s grandfather insisted his grandson get a job, the report said.

The younger Duran returned to the apartment shortly before 2 p.m. and began pounding on the door demanding entry.

The grandfather opened the door and the two argued, the report said.

Police said shortly before 4 p.m., Duran was in the apartment complex and he was carrying a bat in his left hand.

He told police he was punched in his mouth by his grandfather. Duran had blood on his mouth and left ear, the report said.

He told investigators he was frustrated and angry and had a “schizophrenic episode.”

“Initially, Nicholas was told by voices in his head that he was supposed to kill his grandfather,” the report said.

Duran’s grandfather told police he was struck in the head about 50 times.

The report said Duran’s grandfather never lost consciousness in the attack but had clear lacerations on his head.

“The skin was lacerated in a manner that the bone on the top of the skull could clearly be seen,” the report said.
