Highway worker killed on I-15 near Speedway

A highway maintenance worker was killed Wednesday morning after being struck by falling debris.

Nevada Highway Patrol said the incident happened about 8:20 a.m. on Interstate 15 near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. A man was either loading or unloading equipment from a truck when the equipment shifted and fell onto the worker, trooper Loy Hixson said.

The man died at the scene.

Officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were investigating.

The highway was not completely shut down, but the inside lane of southbound I-15 was closed for several hours during the investigation.

The Nevada Department of Transportation said the man was not an NDOT employee but was a subcontractor for the agency.

Hixson said the workers were installing guardrail just north of the Speedway.
