Kansas police officer killed in line of duty former Las Vegan

A Kansas police officer shot and killed Sunday in the line of duty was a former Las Vegas resident.

Randy Janeway said cousin David Gogian graduated from Eldorado High School in 1981. Janeway and Gogian grew up in Las Vegas together.

"The guy would always do the right thing. He took care of everyone his whole life," Janeway said.

Gogian served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1981 to 1986 and the Kansas Air National Guard from 1991 to 2010. He joined the Topeka Police Department in 1992 as a reserve officer and became a full-time officer in 2004.

Gogian's sister, Tiffany Gogian, is a former Las Vegas police officer. Janeway said she still lives in Las Vegas.

Gogian is survived by his wife and four children.

David Edward Tiscareno, 22, of Topeka opened fire on the officers Sunday night at a grocery store, killing both Gogian and officer Jeff Atherly, 29, according to Kyle Smith, deputy director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
