Keck expresses remorse for killings that resulted in his death sentence

A 29-year-old man convicted of murder for using a chain saw to cut a hole in the door of his estranged wife's apartment before shooting her and killing her boyfriend and her fetus was formally sentenced Tuesday.

A Clark County jury in July sentenced William Keck to death after his conviction for first-degree murder.

Judge Douglas Herndon added 30 to 95 years of prison time on top of the death sentence for four other convictions, including attempted murder and manslaughter-killing of an unborn quick child, in the Nov. 3, 2008, shooting.

Keck apologized for what he did and said he hopes his sentence helps the victims and their families find closure.

He then turned his attention to the lone survivor of his attack, his ex-wife.

Speaking about Angel Reyes, who he threatened to shoot in the stomach after learning she was pregnant, Keck said, "It's hard to express my remorse for what happened, and my main address now is for Angel to know I didn't want this to happen. I hope she knows truly that it's fully beyond anything I wanted to happen. I failed you as a husband and I couldn't protect you and I couldn't make you happy. I'll always love you. I hope every day you find happiness."

Reyes, who attended the hearing, didn't stay to hear all of Keck's comments. She left soon after he mentioned her name. She declined to comment after the hearing.

Keck fatally shot Jonathan Lestelle, 26, during an early morning attack at the Fountains at Villa Cordova apartments, 2800 S. Eastern Ave., near Sahara Avenue.

During the attack, Keck also shot Reyes eight times. The 18-week-old fetus, fathered by Lestelle, was struck by at least one bullet and died.

Las Vegas police said Keck used a chain saw to cut a hole in the apartment door. He then shot the doorknob off and fired 21 rounds through the hole.

Keck told investigators he was "deeply in love" with his wife. Reyes testified that before the shooting, Keck had threatened to shoot her in the stomach and kill her baby.

Keck also believed Lestelle's 3-year-old son, Trenton, was in the apartment when he shot 21 times from an AK-47. Trenton was with a relative at the time.
