Las Vegas man arrested in rental scam

Steven Patrick Nohrden, 36, of Las Vegas was arrested in connection with a residential rental scam, the Nevada attorney general's office announced Friday.

Nohrden gained access to vacant homes, then falsely claimed that he was authorized to lease the properties to unsuspecting renters, the criminal complaint said.

The renters moved into the homes and made payments to Nohrden between April and August, until the true homeowners discovered people living on their properties without their consent.

Nohrden was booked on two counts each of burglary, theft and obtaining money under false pretenses.

"Las Vegas has a large number of vacant properties which may be checked on infrequently," Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto said in a statement. "It is this office's goal to ensure that these properties do not become targets for opportunistic scams which may harm the true owners of the property as well as the entire neighborhood."
