Man arrested in death of infant

A 24-year-old man was arrested Monday in connection with the death of a baby who had been left in his care last month, according to a Las Vegas police report obtained Wednesday.

Ian Scott Jones was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jaylin Orey, who died from blunt-force trauma on May 18, one day before turning 7 months old.

According to reports, the mother, 24-year-old Sharnay Orey, left the baby with Keena Mann, 25, on May 14.

A report from Clark County Family Services identified Mann as Jaylin Orey's baby sitter.

Mann told police she and Jones, her boyfriend, kept the baby overnight.

On May 15, Mann said the child appeared healthy before she left for work at 7 a.m. Mann said she told Jones to call Sharnay Orey so she could pick up the baby, the police report said.

Mann called Jones about 1 p.m. He told her the baby was being taken to the hospital. The infant was treated at University Medical Center's intensive care unit.

Jones told police he had fed the baby about 10:30 a.m. that day and tried to reach the child's mother by phone. An hour later, Jones said he put the baby in a playpen.

Shortly before 1 p.m., Jones told police the baby was acting strangely and having difficulty breathing.

Jones "voiced concern of being blamed" for the baby's death to police. The report also said that Jones was visibly frustrated that he was unable to reach the baby's mother.

A doctor concluded that the baby's injuries were consistent with a child who had been shaken, according to police. An autopsy determined Jaylin Orey died from blunt-force trauma to his head.

Jones is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center. He is scheduled to appear in court today.
